How to Make Toilet Paper Roll Scarecrows
1. Cut out all the paper shapes.
Print and cut out the free printables found at the bottom of the post. Trace the overalls onto dark blue paper, the pocket onto light blue paper, the face onto beige paper, the hair onto yellow paper, and the shirt onto yellow (or red) paper.
Trace the hat pieces onto brown kraft paper cardstock. It helps to use thicker paper to give the brim a bit more strength.
2. Attach the papers onto the paper roll.
Wrap the beige paper around the top edge of the paper roll and use clear tape (or tacky glue if you prefer) to secure it in place.
Do the same for the shirt paper, so that its edge very slightly overlaps the bottom edge of the face.
And repeat one more time with the overalls paper, taping to secure.
3. Add the details onto the overalls.
Add small round stickers onto the overall straps as buttons – we used these blue 5/16″ office stickers, but you could also use a hole punch on darker blue paper to make the buttons.
Use tacky glue to attach the lighter blue pocket to the front of the overalls.
4. Make the hat.
Center your paper roll on the circular hat brim that you’ve already cut out and use a pencil to trace it.
Next, use scissors to snip all around this inner circle, right up to the pencil line you just drew.
Gently bend the flaps along the pencil line and then slide the hat brim onto the paper roll. It should fit snugly in place.
5. Add the scarecrow’s hair and face.
Fold the yellow scarecrow hair along the dotted line, as shown on the printable templates, and apply tacky glue to the flaps. Attach each piece of hair on opposite sides of the face – they should just fit below the hat brim.
Eyes: we used round stickers to make the eyes (white 5/16″ circles with blue 3/16″ circles on top). You can also use a hole punch to make two small circles for the eyes. Use a 3/8″ hole punch for the white part and 1/4 inch hole punch for the blue part. Googly eyes would also work well too.
Nose: Cut a small triangle from pink paper and attach it to the face with tacky glue.
Mouth: use a black marker to draw a wide smile with a few small stitches on it.
We also added small eyebrows using small pieces of yellow paper to match the hair, attached with tacky glue.
6. Finish the hat.
Now that the face is complete, we can lock the hat in place and finish it up. With adult assistance, apply a small dab of hot glue under the flaps of the brim at the front and also at the back. Every single flap doesn’t need to be glued in place, but securing at both the front and back will stop it from wiggling around.
Wrap the kraft paper around the top of the roll so that the seams meet at the back with the rest of the paper seams. Because this cardstock is thicker, tape won’t hold it together as easily so we recommend using hot glue to secure it in place, with adult assistance.
Your toilet paper roll scarecrow is now complete! Make as many as you like, switching up their shirt colors for a little variety.
These scarecrows are a fun way to celebrate the fall season, and they’re small enough to perch around the house as decorations after you’re done crafting them.
