We love this as a fun keepsake piece of art, but you can also cut the mushrooms into smaller cards to use as gift tags or cards for any occasion.

Write “I love you so mush” or “I miss you this mush” inside the cards.

Supplies Needed

  • Paintbrushes – medium-sized
  • Cardstock – in whatever color and size you’d like, we used brown kraft cardstock.

How to Make Mushroom Handprint Art

1. Apply red paint onto your child’s hand.

Use a paintbrush to apply non-toxic tempera paint onto your child’s knuckles, leaving the thumb unpainted. This will be the mushroom top, so use whatever color you’d like – we used red and shades of pink. You could also paint the palm of a hand and press that down.

Guide your child’s knuckle to the paper and help them stamp it to form a mushroom top.

Remove their hand from the page and you should have a shape like this. Use the paintbrush to fill in or smooth the edges if needed.

Make as many prints as you’d like in this paint color and then help your child wash their hand with soapy water. Repeat for any other mushroom top colors you want to make.

2. Apply white paint to your child’s finger.

Use a paintbrush to apply white paint onto your child’s index finger.

Guide your child’s finger to the paper and help them stamp their finger directly below the mushroom top.

To make the stem a little thicker, you can add stamped fingerprint beside it.

Stamp stems for all the mushroom tops and then help your child wash their hands.

3. Make the polka dots.

Once the mushroom tops are dry, apply white paint to one of your child’s fingertips.

Guide their hand to the mushrooms and help them stamp polka dots onto the mushroom tops. You can also use the back of a pencil to stamp the white dots onto the mushrooms.

Repeat for all the mushrooms and allow to dry completely.

Your mushroom handprint art is complete! Don’t forget to write your child’s name and the date on the back of each print.

These make adorable cards or gift tags!

To turn them into a gift tag, just add a hole punch to the top and some twine.
