How to Make a Koala Handprint
1. Make the card base.
Fold a piece of light grey cardstock in half.
Use a pencil to trace your child’s hand onto the card so that the outer side of their pinky finger is directly on the fold, as shown in the image below.
Cut out the card along the pencil line, leaving the fold uncut.
Once cut out, the card should look like this when open.
2. Make the koala’s head.
Download, print, and cut out the koala templates. You can get the template sent to you at the bottom of the post. You can also draw your own head, ears and nose.
Trace the pieces onto paper and cut them out. Trace the nose on black paper, the head and outer ears on the same grey as the handprint body, and the inner ears on a slightly lighter shade of grey, or even a light pink.
Glue the inner ears on top of the outer ears.
Glue each ear onto the side of the koala’s head.
3. Add the face details.
Glue the nose onto the center of the koala’s face.
Glue 2 googly eyes onto the head and use a black marker to draw on a small mouth attached to the nose.
To add rosy cheeks, use the eraser end of a pencil and dip it into pink paint. Stamp a small circle on each cheek and let dry completely.
4. Glue the head onto the body.
Apply glue to the back of the koala’s head and glue it to the handprint body.
5. Add the branch.
Cut a brown pipe cleaner into a piece about 6″ long.
Then, cut out small green leaves and glue them onto a brown pipe cleaner so that it looks like a branch. We did 2 leaves per branch.
Open up the koala card and use tacky glue or hot glue (adults to assist) to glue the pipe cleaner branch onto the ends of the fingertips, so that it looks like the koala is holding onto the branch.
6. Write a message inside.
Use a marker to write a message inside the koala card – we wrote “I love hanging with you!”. We also love “You’re a Koala-ty Friend!”.
Finish the card by writing your child’s name and the date on the back of the card.
